Clair had played the piano for many years before I met her. When she wanted to learn a new piece of music, she would have to look-up sheet music and spend weeks memorizing it. This is the way most people are taught.

When learning pop songs, there is no "correct" way to play the song, so the sheet music is merely a guide.  Oftentimes, playing it a little differently that the original can even lead to new "covers" of the song that are sometimes even better than the original (Lily Allen - Somewhere Only We Know)
